GINKGO
Biloba ‘Maidenhair tree’
This is a form of deciduous conifer that grew on Earth about 160 million years ago. The fact that this plant loses its leaves gives us an autumn display of clear yellow. Ginkgo is not like a conifer but looks like a tree. The tree was introduced into Britain in 1758. It will form a medium sized tree over the years.
JUNIPERUS
Junipers are a very large genus and have a very diverse range. Some are dwarf, some spread over the ground, others are large forest trees. They also grow in a wide range of sites and temperatures. They are capable of tolerating a calcareous soil, but this is not essential. The fruits of Junipers are fleshy and like a berry.
JUNIPER CHINENSIS
Blue Alps
Bright silvery blue spiky foliage that is borne on drooping branches gives this irregular bush a stunning appearance.
Grows to a medium sized bush this is ideal for a spot plant in a lawn.

Pyramidalis
The most widely planted pyramid shaped conifers, it has a blue/ green colour that is stronger if the plant is kept fed. One drawback is that Red Spider Mites love to live in the dry centre. This is no real problem because watering from the top and letting the water run through the bush should keep them at bay.
JUNIPER COMMUNIS
Compressa
This is the conifer that is always quoted to be planted in a
trough. Annual growth is approximately 1 inch. Height in 10yrs. Half a metre. The name sometimes given to this conifer is "The Noah's Ark Juniper". Trim off any pieces of long shoots to keep the dense habit.
Depressa Aurea
The colour change from the brightest gold to a bronze is very dramatic. Together with it's prostrate habit makes it well worth looking out for. Height in 10yrs 0.3m-1m.
Gold Cone
Golden/yellow foliage at its best in spring, but good all year round. Although not as dense as C. Compressa it is ideal for the rock garden. Height in 10yrs.1m-1.5m. |

Golden Showers
This is one of the best conifers in production today. The combined Green/Gold foliage Hangs down at the tips to give the effect of falling water. Height in 10yrs.
Green Carpet
As the name suggests growing tight to the ground this slow growing Juniper is ideal for patio pots and rock gardens. Height in 10yrs.
Repanda
One of the older conifers in cultivation today it still has a place in the garden. Growing in a semi / prostrate fashion it will cover banks and soften hard corners. One thing to remember is that Repanda is the overwinter host of the Black Bean Aphid, this gives us the advantage of controlling them in early Spring before they have moved to your Beans.
JUNIPER CONFERTA
The Shore Juniper
This ground hugging plant has large needles and a flowing habit. The Spring colour is Apple green which becomes darker as the year progresses.
Blue Pacific
A sport of Conferta this is has a blue/green hue to the foliage.

 |
The ground hugging growth makes this plant useful for covering banks or the side of pond or water. Height in 10yrs.
Conferta
Dense ground cover of bright green foliage. Will stand maritime areas. Height in 10 years 15cm with a spread of 90cm.
JUNIPER DAVURICA
Expansa Aureospicata
Sage/green foliage blotched with sulphur/yellow looks striking on this large ( 1m high x 3m wide) spreading conifer. The blotches of yellow do not grow as fast as the green parts so this causes the plant to fill out erratically.
Variegata
The same as Aureospicata but with pure white blotches.
JUNIPER HORIZONTALIS
Bar Harbour
A prostrate form that hugs the ground .The glaucous grey/green foliage turn much darker in the winter.
Blue Chip
Slower than some of this group the silvery blue is held up from the ground to form a loose mat. There are some nurseries that call this plant Blue Moon. Height in 10yrs 0.25m x 1m. |
